Stampin’ Up! Winter Woods with Dashing Deer

I have been seeing this really cool “sparkler art” video with die cut paper deer on a canvas all over Facebook…it’s really neat to watch and I love the result!  However, I didn’t have sparklers…and if I did, I was afraid that I’d burn the house down trying to recreate it, so I opted to try for a stamped version instead!  🙂

It took me a few tries with different techniques to get a similar look to the sparkler art.  It was very simple, just took a few tries to get the effect to work without too much of the ink running.  I started by stamping the two images from the Dashing Deer stamp set (available Sept 5) in VersaMark ink on a panel of Shimmery White paper.  I sprinkled the deer with Clear Stampin’ Emboss Powder and then heat embossed them.

I stamped the tree line image from the Winter Woods stamp set (available Sept 5) in Soft Suede ink over the deer images and then lightly spritzed the panel with water and a Stampin’ Spritzer.  I held the Spritzer about 24 inches away from the panel, sprayed the water and then moved the paper toward the mist rather than spraying the panel directly.  This technique allowed a little more control over how saturated the panel got.  Once I got most of the panel damp, I set it aside to dry.

There were a few areas that didn’t have much color around the deer, so I sponged a little more Soft Suede ink on the panel with a Sponge Dauber to make the deer stand out more.  I wiped the excess ink off the embossed images with a paper towel.  Then I adhered the panel to a Thick Whisper White card base with Multipurpose Liquid Glue.  I stamped the sentiment from the Winter Wood stamp set in Real Red ink on a panel of Shimmery White card stock and then cut it out with a Layering Ovals Framelits Dies.  I adhered it to an oval cut from Real Red card stock with a larger Layering Ovals Frameits Die with SNAIL.

I cut another panel of Shimmery White card stock with the branch die from the In the Woods Frameits Dies (available Sept 5) and then adhered the die cuts with Glue Dots to the card front.  I added the layered ovals with Stampin’ Dimensionals and then adhered three gold Metallic Pearls to finish the card front.

I stamped the sentiment and border image from the Dashing Deer stamp set in Real Red and Soft Suede inks on a panel of Whisper White card stock inside the card.

  1. Wow gorgeous card Amy! 2 of my favorites trees and deer. I definitely want to try this technique and I love the colors you used.its sad cause it’s a reminder that a certain season is sneaking up fast as usual. Of course it’s hard to imagine when ohio has schools closed due to the heat. Anyhow you have motivated me to get working on my Christmas cards.

  2. Fabulous card Amy! I will definitely try it. I’m relatively new to stampin up. Why did you use shimmer paper instead of watercolor or regular whisper white? Thanks.

    • Thanks Connie! I used Shimmery White because it holds up much better when you use it with water. I tried it initially with Thick Whisper White and the paper got all bumpy with water spots. Shimmery White has a little bit of a glossy coating that works better for techniques that need water. 🙂

  3. Amy, you have to do a video on this striking card. Please. I tried but its nothing compared to yours. Please start doing videos as it truly will help us beginners. This card is just too stunning. Warm Wishes: Mal, Melbourne, Australia

    • Thanks Mal! I will see if I can get one done. The main thing that I did was just keep spritzing from a distance until you get the effect that you want. And if there are “white” areas, just sponge on more ink when the paper dries. 🙂

      • Thanks Amy. I did spritz a fair bit. Just doesnt look as elegant as yours. But I shall keep trying (good practice for heat embossing!!!!) but a video would really help. XX M

      • This was my 4th try with the technique too…wrong paper on the first two and too much water on the 3rd one. The forth one turned out just right! 🙂

  4. Wow. This is amazing. I’m so impressed you figured out how to make it look so much like the sparklers canvas! Great job. You are amazing!

  5. Absolutely stunning, Amy!
Brilliant way to get the ‘sparkler effect’. I’d probably burn the house down or worse burn myself trying it with sparklers. So excited you came up with a plan to achieve the effect without anyone getting hurt!

  6. Love your take on the ‘sparkler art’ …. have it pinned ready to use as inspiration when my stamps arrive but now I will use you wonderful card instead …. thank you for sharing 🙂

  7. how wonderful to see there’s another way to do this card, as I, too, was afraid I’d have my husband standing over my shoulders with a fire extinguisher to put out the smell of burning card stock! TFS.!!

    • You are so welcome! I was was too chicken to try it with sparklers…I’d have made a huge mess and probably burned up at least a pack of paper trying to get it right!! 🙂
