Tag a Bag Gusseted Halloween Gift Bag

I saw a video from a presenter at Stampin’ Up!’s 2013 Convention where she demonstrated how to turn one of the flat Tag a Bag Gift Bags into a gusseted bag.  It’s a really simple process so I thought I’d show you one that I made for Halloween.  I’m also adding this to my Tutorials list so that you can find the instructions back quickly if you’re interested.

My bag design was inspired by the CAS(E) This Sketch #39 and The Paper Players Fall Theme Anything But a Card Challenge.

Seasonal Sayings

Here are the instructions for turning the flat Tag a Bag Gift Bag into a gusseted bag:

Place your bag on your Simply Scored Scoring Tool with the bottom/flat end against the top tool bar and score the bag on both sides 1 inch from the edge.  Then turn your bag 90 degrees so that the side of the bag is lined up against the top tool bar and score the bag 1-1/2″ from the bottom.  Then cut from the bottom of the bag along the score line up to the 1-1/2″ score line on both sides.  I’ve put a picture of the pattern drawn on white card stock so that it’s easy to see.

Tag a Bag

Trim the very bottom of the bag off with your Paper Snips (about 1/8″, just enough so that it is open across the bottom).  Open the bag up and fold it into a rectangle along the score lines.

Tag a Bag 1

Fold the two smaller flaps toward the center along the score lines.

Tag a Bag 2

Fold the larger bottom flap in toward the center along the score line.  Fold your top larger flap toward the center along the score line and apply Sticky Strip to the inside of the flap.  Adhered your top flap to your bottom and side flaps to create a rectangular bag.

Tag a Bag 3

Cut a 1-15/16″ x 2-15/16″ panel from the cardboard backing that comes in the package of bags and place it in the bottom of the bag for additional support.

Tag a Bag 4

Then decorate the bag as you wish and when you are ready to close it, press the center score lines (the original score lines before the bag is altered) toward the middle and fold over the top.

Tag a Bag 5

I decided to do a Halloween themed bag and I started by cutting a Soft Suede panel with the Apothecary Accents Framelits die.  Then I embossed the panel with the Woodgrain Embossing Folder and I sponged the edges with Soft Suede ink.  I punched out five Large Oval Punches from Tangerine Tango card stock, sponged the edges with Soft Suede ink and adhered them with SNAIL to the Soft Suede die cut, overlapping each other to create the pumpkin.

Seasonal Sayings 1

I punched out two stems from Wild Wasabi card stock using the stem on the Bird Builder Punch, snipped off one end and adhered it at the top of the pumpkin with SNAIL, then rolled the remaining stems around my scoring tool tip to create the curls.  I adhered the two curled pieces to the card front with SNAIL.  Then I stamped the sentiment from the Seasonal Sayings stamp set in VersaMark ink on a Name Banner from the Thankful Tablescape Simply Created Kit, sprinkled it with Tangerine Tango Stampin’ Emboss Powder and heat embossed it.  I adhered the sentiment banner with Stampin’ Dimensionals to the Soft Suede panel.

Best of Flowers

Then I stamped the daisy image from the Best of Flowers stamp set in StazOn Jet Black ink on a Whisper White panel two times.  I colored the images with my Stampin’ Write Markers, then used the small circle punch from the Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack to punch the center of one of the flowers out.  I punched the other flower out with the 1-1/4″ Scallop Circle Punch and I adhered the punched flower center to the scallop punch with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Then I punched one full stem and one set of leaves from Wild Wasabi card stock using the Bird Builder Punch, adhered them to the die cut with SNAIL, then adhered the flower with SNAIL.  I adhered the decorated die cut to the bag front with Sticky Strip and I tied a bow around a mini clothespin using Tangerine Tango Baker’s Twine (both from the Tag a Bag Accessory Kit), folded the top of the bag closed and placed the mini clothespin at the top.

So have I convinced you to buy the Tag a Bag Bundle and the Thankful Tablescape Simply Created Kit yet?  Both of these items have so many great pieces in them, I’m finding all sorts of things that I can make!

  1. What an adorable idea…I used to do this with business-sized envelopes, it’s fun to see it done with those fun bags as well! LOVE the tag and punkin too! Thanks for sharing it with us at the Paper Players this week!
