Our travels in Italy So Far!!

As our cruise is starting to wind down, I thought that I’d share a few photos from our trip so far.  I’ve shared a bunch out on my Facebook page so feel free to stop by and check them all out there!  I’ll continue to share the photos as we continue traveling through Italy.

Our trip started in Rome.  We were only there for less than a day, so we didn’t have a lot of time to see things, but I did grab a few photos while we were out and about.

The Piazza di Spagna near the Spanish Steps.

The Spanish Steps on a very busy Saturday afternoon (the weather was beautiful too!).

A view down the street to the right from our hotel entrance.

And the view down the street to the left from the hotel.  The looks toward the Piazza del Popolo.

One of the beautiful churches in the Piazza del Popolo.

The monument in the center of the Piazza del Popolo.

We headed out to the Port Of Rome to hop on our cruise on Sunday morning.  It’s a really impressive tall sailing ship!  Our rooms are absolutely amazing!  I’ve had a lot of people asking about the cruise line, we are sailing on a WindStar Cruise and the name of our ship is the Wind Surf.

Our living room.

The other side of the living room.

A little fruit place, some flowers and some champagne to welcome us aboard.

The bedroom.

The closet…I think it’s bigger than my closet at home!!

The bathroom is pretty amazing too!

We were up on deck as we left the harbor and the sails were raised.

Mary and Wayne learning all about driving the ship…on the smaller ships, you can walk onto the bridge and look around almost any time while we’re sailing!

The first sunset aboard.  We watched that while we were eating dinner outside.

Our first stop was Sorrento, Italy and we had tour of Pompeii on the agenda for the day.

A view over Sorrento with our ship out in the water.  One of the many stunning views of the town and water that we had on our way to and from Pompeii.

The theater in Pompeii.

One of the amazing streets in Pompeii, you can see the grooves worn by wagons in the volcanic rock…preserved for almost 2000 years!  They had a very advanced water and sewer system under the streets too, very advanced for that time.

This was a part of a bakery.

One of the may fountains that were at the intersections to help with navigation through the city.

This was the back garden of one of the very large homes in Pompeii.  Apparently the “owner” of the block lived in the very large house in the center and rented out the shops on the block where the shop keepers lived and worked.

One of the beautifully preserved tile floors (made from volcanic rock and limestone) in one of the homes in Pompeii.

This is a plaster cast of someone living in Pompeii at the time of the volcanic eruption that buried the city in 20 feet of ash.  Archeologists have found the remains of 4000 people but only have about 25 plaster casts like this.

So sad and so amazing to see all at the same time.

This is part of the courthouse in Pompeii.  This was the largest public building in the city and was used for all sorts of purposes.

Once we finished the tour in Pompeii, we headed back to Sorrento for a little pizza and a walk around town.

The second day of our cruise took us to the island of Sicily and the town of Giardini Naxos.  It was a small town on the beach where we did a walk around and lunch on our own.

Our view for lunch!

The beach in Giardini Naxos.

Lots of boats on the edge of the water!

A beautiful town on the water!

Our third stop on the cruise took us to Kotor, Montenegro!

The ship had to navigate down a narrow passage to get to the beautiful town.  The clouds perfectly framed the mountains as we sailed in.

Such a beautiful little town right on the water!

Views from all around the ship!

Love the architecture and the colors!

Our excursion in Kotor was for an olive oil tasting and the views on the ride up the hill were stunning!

The water is SO blue!!

This is the original olive press used on the farm.  The process has since been modernized, but the original press is still in the tasting room.

One of the tables in the tasting room.

Part of the original press used to make olive oil.

We were treated to several different foods to pair with the olive oil…each one was more yummy than the last!

Once we finished our tasting event, we headed back to the “old” city of Kotor, which was a walled city.  The main entrance was this narrow tunnel.

The wall extended beyond the city and around the area.  If you look closely, you can see the wall sort-of trailing off up in to the mountains in the center of this photo.

A few photos around the city.  Everything was tightly packed together with “squares” near the churches and narrow walkways everywhere else.

A peek at one of the churches as we headed toward the square.

The square near the church opened up to a great place with lots of cute restaurants and shops!

Then we were on to Dubrovnik, Croatia!

The sites were spectacular in Dubrovnik too!  We did a “Game Of Thrones” walking tour…I’ve never watched the show, but the walking tour was amazing!  If you did watch the show, but that you’ll recognize a lot of the places that we saw!

This was part of the original port of Dubrovnik.

And this was part of the fortress at the water that was set up to defend the city.

We climbed up the steps of the fortress and the views of the sea were stunning!

Looking the opposite direction from the steps.

A few of the main entry into the fortress.

Another view of the city from the fortress.

We left the fortress and headed down into the old walled city of Dubrovnik.  It was immaculately clean and lots of cute shops, pretty churches and restaurants.

One of the churches with the clocktower behind.

We were allowed to climb the wall around the city and the views from above were amazing!!

The tower at the very top of the wall.

The stone walkway around the edge of the tower.

About 900 residents still actually live within the walled city.

Check out the beautiful gardens!

A view of the “main street” in the walled city from the wall.

Hope that you’ve enjoyed seeing the photos!  We have stops in Split, Croatia; Rovinj, Croatia and finally Venice, Italy on our cruise.  After the cruise, we’re heading to Cinque Terre, Italy for a few days in a house on the coast.  I’ll be posting pictures along the way on my Facebook page so head over there to follow along if you’d like!
