Serene Silhouettes & Gently Falling With Masking Tape Technique

I tried out the Masking Tape Technique for the first time and I had so much fun that I created two cards!  It’s really simple and quick and the best part is that it’s supposed to look a little uneven so you can’t really goof it up.  🙂  I put together a quick tutorial for this technique and I’m putting it onto my Tutorials Page so you can click on the Tutorials tab at the top of the page to find it back quickly in the future.

I used the CAS(E) This Sketch #46 and the CAS-ual Friday CFC115 Challenges to inspire my card design.  And I used the Serene Silhouettes and Gently Falling stamp sets from Stampin’ Up! for the images.

Masking Tape Technique

Here is a quick tutorial for the Masking Tape Technique:

Tape off a square using blue painters tape on your card stock.  I wanted the stripes to end about 1/2″ from the edge of my card so I masked the edges of my panel, however you do not need to include this step if you don’t have a specific endpoint for your stripes.

Masking Tape Technique 1

Then tear a piece of painters tape so that it is about 2″ longer than the length that you’d like your stripe to be.  This allows you enough room to ink up your masking tape without getting ink all over your fingers when you lift it.  Take your piece of tape and place it across your inkpad and press down gently across the entire strip.  If the stripe on your card is longer than your inkpad, simply pick up the tape and move it to the uninked area and press it down again to cover the rest of the strip of tape.

Masking Tape Technique 2

Place your strip of inked tape down in the spot on your card stock in the location that you want it and press across the entire strip.  Once you’ve pressed the strip down, lift off the tape and you’ll have your first stipe.

Masking Tape Technique 3

Repeat this process with clean pieces of tape for each color that you’d like to use, then assemble the rest of your card.  Super easy and fun too!

Gently Falling 1

To create this card, I used Cajun Craze, Always Artichoke and Crushed Curry inks with the Masking Tape Technique shown above on a Very Vanilla panel.  I left the painters tape in place and stamped the images from the Gently Falling stamp set in Chocolate Chip ink over the masked area.  Then I peeled up the painters tape and adhered the panel to a Chocolate Chip card base with SNAIL.

Gently Falling 2

I stamped the sentiment from the Another Thank You Photopolymer stamp set in Crushed Curry ink, then stamped it a second time in Chocolate Chip ink on a Very Vanilla strip.  I punched the end with the Hexagon Punch and adhered it to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  I added Cajun Craze and Always Artichoke Candy Dots next to the sentiment to finish the card front.

Gently Falling 3

I finished the inside of this card by stamping the leaf image again in Chocolate Chip ink on a Very Vanilla panel and I adhered it with SNAIL.

I used the same technique only different colors and stamped images for my second card:

Serene Silhouettes

The background colors are Island Indigo, Bermuda Bay and Pool Party and I stamped the image from the Serene Silhouettes stamp set in Chocolate Chip ink over the stripes.  I used my Chocolate Chip Stampin’ Write Marker to add a little length to the trunk of the tree.  I adhered the stamped panel to a Pool Party panel, then to a Chocolate Chip card base with SNAIL.
