Watercolor Swallowtail Card

Today I’m sharing a card that I made for my fantastic upline, Sandi MacIverwho just found out that she made the 2013 Founders Circle (which means that she is one of the top 100 Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators).  An awesome accomplishment so I thought that I’d send her a quick card.  I used the Swallowtail stamp and my Aqua Painter to create this card.  My card design was inspired by the Try Stampin’ on Tuesday Challenge #127.

Swallowtail

I started by adhering a panel of the Venetian Romance DSP to a Pistachio Pudding card base with SNAIL.

Swallowtail 1

Then I stamped the Swallowtail image in VersaMark ink on a Very Vanilla panel, sprinkled it with Black Stampin’ Emboss Powder and heat embossed it.  I used my Aqua Painter and my ink pads to paint the butterfly in Pistachio Pudding and Island Indigo and rounded the corners of the panel with the 3/16″ Corner Punch.  Then I sponged the edges of the image with Pistachio Pudding ink.  I rounded the corners on a Pistachio Pudding panel and adhered it to the embossed image then to the card front with SNAIL.  I stamped the sentiment from the Loving Thoughts stamp set in Pistachio Pudding ink on a Very Vanilla panel, punched it out with the Word Window Punch, adhered it with SNAIL to a Modern Label Punch from Pistachio Pudding card stock, then to the card front with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

Swallowtail 3

To create the ties through the button holes, I cut two very thin strips of Pistachio Pudding card stock and ran them through the button holes.  I tied a half knot to hold the paper in place.  I love that this works to fill a button hole when you don’t have ribbon in the size that you want!

Swallowtail 2

Then I punched four leaves from Pistachio Pudding card stock and four leaves from Island Indigo Core’dinations card stock using the Bird Builder Punch.  I snipped off the long branches and sanded the Island Indigo Core’dinations card stock with my Sanding Block.  I adhered the leaf punches to the card front with SNAIL, then adhered the buttons with the paper strips tied through them with Glue Dots to finish the card front.

Swallowtial 4

I finished the inside of the card by stamping the Swallowtail image again in Pistachio Pudding ink on a Very Vanilla panel.

  1. Fabulous card! I love how you have used the sketch and your details are perfect. Thanks for joining us this week at Try Stampin’ On Tuesday.

  2. Hello: I just saw your amazing card on the SCS gallery and I love it. This stamp is a bit intimidating because of it’s size but the possibilities are endless when you use it, either whole or in parts. You did a beautiful job coloring it, no matter what medium you use, the results are always stunning.
Thank you for sharing the instructions.
    Maria A. Rodriguez.
